Black Sails: The Perfect Show You’ve Never Seen

A video essay about how Black Sails, a show about queer pirates and revolutionaries, became the most underrated series of the decade – and Game of Thrones became a mess. Let’s talk LGBT representation, battling colonialism, and the problem with adaptations.

Black Sails: Opening Scene – Raid on a Trade Ship (Black Sails, S01E01)

“He that shall desert the ship or his quarters in the time of battle shall be punished by death or marooning.” This is a real rule from a real pirate moral code, but our hero John Silver has his own version. “If the captain is dead and i’m alive, i like my chances!”

If you are a pirate movie fan, this series is for you! Black Sails takes us to caribbean and lets us see how is the rivalry in the high seas. In this scene, we see a fearsome pirate ship attacking and raiding/boarding another ship. There are plenty of explosions and ship battles, also we meet one of our main characters John Silver and see how he can be called pragmatic, when it comes to do business in the seas…

FROM IMDB PAGE
A prequel to the (fictional) events of Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island”. The series centres on a group of pirates operating out of Nassau in the Bahamas. We meet characters from history – Captain Charles Vane, Governor Woodes Rogers, Jack Rackham and Anne Bonny – plus characters from fiction – Captain Flint and, of course, Long John Silver.

“Black Sails”: Why shooting a man-of-war in the ass with your weaker ship is not a good idea.

Captain Flynn’s crew learns the hard way.
