Black Sails: The Perfect Show You’ve Never Seen
A video essay about how Black Sails, a show about queer pirates and revolutionaries, became the most underrated series of the decade – and Game of Thrones became a mess. Let’s talk LGBT representation, battling colonialism, and the problem with adaptations.
Thanks to Gemma (https://www.youtube.com/user/AMillionMadMusings) and Rebecca (https://www.youtube.com/rebeccashoptaw) for script editing
And to Daphne at Fathoms Deep for being as obsessed with this show as me (arguably even more so) – check out the podcast if you enjoyed the show, it is brilliant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k70LznoRa5s &list=PLD5qyyvAszxehmCnF9yHk5CYmZ55_PKQL
I deliver engaging and inspiring workshops and talks at events, businesses, and universities across the world (see below for more details).
If you would like to speak about the possibility of me running a workshop or speaking at an event please get in touch via email: [email protected]
I facilitate tailor made workshops, designed to give participants a variety of discussion opportunities, interactive elements, and a final longer task individually or as part of a group.
The goal of my workshops is that participants come out of the them with actionable points to be put into practice afterwards, rather than feeling as if they had simply talked through the same old topics on that subject.

Black Sails: Opening Scene – Raid on a Trade Ship (Black Sails, S01E01)
“He that shall desert the ship or his quarters in the time of battle shall be punished by death or marooning.” This is a real rule from a real pirate moral code, but our hero John Silver has his own version. “If the captain is dead and i’m alive, i like my chances!”
If you are a pirate movie fan, this series is for you! Black Sails takes us to caribbean and lets us see how is the rivalry in the high seas. In this scene, we see a fearsome pirate ship attacking and raiding/boarding another ship. There are plenty of explosions and ship battles, also we meet one of our main characters John Silver and see how he can be called pragmatic, when it comes to do business in the seas…

All music, art and footage belong to their respective owners, this is just fair use. We are a channel dedicated to bring fan of battle movies together and we are trying to do it by removing all scenes unrelated to a battle, fight or something about a battle or fight that is about to take place. We are obviously not monetizing this content, monetization belongs to rightful owners.
FROM IMDB PAGE
A prequel to the (fictional) events of Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island”. The series centres on a group of pirates operating out of Nassau in the Bahamas. We meet characters from history – Captain Charles Vane, Governor Woodes Rogers, Jack Rackham and Anne Bonny – plus characters from fiction – Captain Flint and, of course, Long John Silver.
“Black Sails”: Why shooting a man-of-war in the ass with your weaker ship is not a good idea.
Captain Flynn’s crew learns the hard way.
